On our last day before break, the class got to do a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) project. We discussed how the pilgrims came to the New World on boats, what they had to bring with them, etc... I then told them their goal for the project would be to build a boat with their team that could hold 100 pilgrims (we used pennies) when we tested it in our ocean (a tub of water). I gave them bags full of tape, straws, tin foil, and Styrofoam strips, and told them they could build it however they wanted as long as they only used the supplies given and it could fit in our ocean. The kids got the opportunity to learn how to work as a team, and got to figure out what worked and what didn't along the way and adjust their plans as they went. It was a great learning experience!
